Subway is like Jameis Winston. It's amazing, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had and other times it's one of the most disgusting pieces of rock I've ever tasted. Food chains have a reputation for inconsistency, and some places even try to cut corners to save money, by changing a few ingredients.
These photos shown are some of the food places on our list, and you can see between all of them, the supposed quality on these places is not always on par with how it looks online (Photo: Subway).
The crazy part is that some of these modifications they add to these ingredients would not even be considered the type of food they’re saying it is. An example of this could be how Ireland’s Supreme Court legally ruled that Subway's bread is closer to cake, because of how much sugar they add to it.
This is insane, because America hasn’t done anything about this. It is almost as if they were trying to hide what the actual ingredients were to Americans. According to Center for Science In The Public Interest , "ADA (Azodicarbonamide) is used in foods despite concerns regarding its safe use. Safety concerns mainly stem from its breakdown products, semicarbazide (SEM) and ethyl carbamate (EC; also known as urethane), that form during the cooking process. The FDA itself recognizes that ADA forms SEM and EC during the baking process and acknowledges that both SEM and EC are associated with cancer in animals."
Why are we putting potentially dangerous carcinogens in edible food? Because Subway is so cheap, some people might literally only be able to afford this.
Shake Shack might as well be tried for robbery. The portion sizes make me want a refund before even eating. The good thing Shake Shack has going for them is the fact they use 100% All-natural Angus beef, It’s one of the healthiest options for a grilled burger. Although the meat is high grade, there's been many cases of sickness resulting from eating Shake Shack.
Heres a meal from Shake Shack, not the worst but certaintly not the best.
According to ESPN, “Philedelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg and New York Mets first baseman Lucas Duda publicly blamed Shake Shack for severe food poisoning after eating burgers at Citi Field. Dude was hospitalized, and Sandberg reported losing 6 pounds over two days.” Also, there's been public outrage over the fact that while they have good grades in meat they had to have improperly handled the meat, or undercooked it. We should not have issues of how long to cook something when the business was established nearly over 25 years ago.
According to foodbabe.com, One burger from Shake Shack, contains 73 ingredients. That is 73 different chances to have an allergic reaction or stomach issues. This is not okay, this can lead to health issues, especially if some of the ingredients, even including salt can be addictive. Maybe fast food is betting on the fact that people can't read or aren't worried about the health issues eating this food could cause.
McDonald's has been around a lot longer than these other businesses on this list, and they have changed their ingredients a concernable amount of times, thought to be around 100, but there's no clear number.
According to qualityassurancemag.com, they've been heading in the right direction recently, changing some ingredients for the better, like removing some harmful additives that were originally used. Some of these harmful additives removed can include high fructose corn syrup, margarine, and this thing called “Pink Slime”. It was a burger treated with ammonia gas. this was removed around 2011, due to community backlash.
This is a display of the older generational signs of McDonald's.
Even though they removed all of these harmful additives, there are still concerns of industrial additives, like sodium acid pyrophosphate, why are we adding things to food to change their color. Why do their fries have 14 ingredients? (source:mcdonalds.com)
Now we're getting to the questionable food places, the food places that most people would agree are not worth it. Arby’s has the meats, it's just questionable what the meat actually is. There were rumors spreading about how Arby's gets their meat, and it's gross.
This is a roast beef sandwich from Arbys, that is edited to look more appetizing/appealing.
Some people have pointed towards Arby's getting their roast beef, from a liquid paste, in a gelatinized bag of beef. It's almost like the eggs that they give out at hotels for breakfast. They don’t even prepare each order as it's ordered, they pre-cook them, in the bags, before even receiving orders. What if they just don’t get enough orders to sell all that beef, when it's already cooked. Are they going to put it back in the fridge and heat it back up?
Arby’s also faced a class action lawsuit, relating to how misleading their products are. They purposefully try to make the sandwich better on paper so when people go in they think they’ll get a sandwich just like on the advertisements, they just don't receive the same quality product as pictured. They also literally push the meat to the front side of the sandwich for ads, to try and make it look like you get more food, and then when you get it it's just not the same amount as pictured.
Long John Silver's, is one of the most greasy fast food places you could get food from. There have been so many reports of digestive issues, from people eating their fried foods and experts have regarded it as one of the most unhealthy fast food places you can eat at.
This is a sampler meal from long john silvers, you can see the inconsistencies within the meal (Photo: commons.wikimedia.org/).
Their inconsistency might be worse than everything else on this list, because if you get lucky, you might be able to get a good meal, but that's only if you're lucky. They're also known for fast food seafood, and if you know about seafood, you know that if improperly prepared or cooked, food poisoning is a common thing that occurs.
They have faced multiple lawsuits, not even just for the food quality, but the overall workplace quality of this place. They are regarded by most people as being the worst food place in America. According to cspi.org, they had an item on their menu containing 33 grams of trans fat. One of the most dangerous ingredients if consumed in high quantities. Also that same dish contained 3700 milligrams of sodium, which is 400 milligrams higher than the daily value. In a single meal, you're getting all of the sodium you need to last you an entire day.
Even just by working there you're at risk, because of how many times they got sued regarding workplace safety, and treatment of employees. For all these lawsuits, and being regarded as some of the worst food in America, you would think they would be bankrupt, or trying to remodel their menus, but no. They don't even have that many other options if you don't want seafood, and most of the time those other options are about as healthy as the seafood, or probably even worse, since their specialty is seafood.
